As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,279 people, 549 households, and 360 families residing in the town. The population density was 53.0 people per square mile (20.5/km²). There were 866 housing units at an average density of 35.9 per square mile (13.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.18% White, 0.31% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 6.57% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.57% of the population.
There were 549 households out of which 21.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.67.
In the town the population was spread out with 18.5% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 24.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
